Proteomic Methods of Detection and Quantification of Protein Toxins
نویسندگان
چکیده
Biological toxins are a heterogeneous group of compounds that share commonalities with biological and chemical agents. Among them, protein toxins represent a considerable, diverse set. They cover a broad range of molecular weights from less than 1000 Da to more than 150 kDa. This review aims to compare conventional detection methods of protein toxins such as in vitro bioassays with proteomic methods, including immunoassays and mass spectrometry-based techniques and their combination. Special emphasis is given to toxins falling into a group of selected agents, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, such as Staphylococcal enterotoxins, Bacillus anthracis toxins, Clostridium botulinum toxins, Clostridium perfringens epsilon toxin, ricin from Ricinus communis, Abrin from Abrus precatorius or control of trade in dual-use items in the European Union, including lesser known protein toxins such as Viscumin from Viscum album. The analysis of protein toxins and monitoring for biological threats, i.e., the deliberate spread of infectious microorganisms or toxins through water, food, or the air, requires rapid and reliable methods for the early identification of these agents.

Proteomic Analysis of Gene Expression in Basal Cell Carcinoma
Background: Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is a type of non-melanoma skin cancer. Alteration in gene expression is the important event that happens in cancer cell. Detection of this event is possible by proteomics techniques. Methods: Normal and tumor tissues were taken from BCC patient. Total proteins were purified by standard methods, and proteins were separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis...

Objective(s):Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that appears on the skin. Although psoriasis is clinically and histologically well characterized, its pathogenesis is unknown in detail. The aims of this study were to evaluate the proteome of psoriatic patients' sera and to compare them with those of normal healthy human to find valuable biomarkers. Materials and Methods: In a case-control study,...
متن کاملDetection and Quantification of Protein Spots by Pinnacle.
Accurate spot detection and quantification is a challenging task that must be performed effectively in order to properly extract the proteomic information from two-dimensional (2-D) gel electrophoresis images. In Morris et al., Bioinformatics 24:529-536, 2008, we introduced Pinnacle, an automatic, fast, effective noncommercial package for spot detection and quantification for 2-D gel images, an...

Meat, as an important source of protein, is one of the main parts of many people’s diet. Due toeconomic interests and thereupon adulteration, there are special concerns on its accurate labeling. In this study Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy combined with chemometrictechniques (principal component analysis (PCA), artificial neural networks (ANNs), and partial<...
متن کاملImproved label-free LC-MS protein quantification by peptide analysis: A study
In proteomic experiments quantification becomes increasingly important not only for differential proteomic analysis, but also for the identification of specific proteins studying protein complexes (e. g. by affinity purification [1]). Thus, due to increasing sensitivity and scan speed of modern MS instruments, targets and controls show largely overlapping protein patterns with some proteins pre...
